The material

Children have a large natural desire to learn and to discover the world that surrounds them.  The material
that is available for children in a Montessori setting is meant to stimulate and canalise this curiosity:
practical life, motility, sensorial development, french, English, mathematics, geography, botany, zoology,
music and art, etc. are offered at an individual level.

The educator employs the pedagogical material which has been carefully developed to be progressive
(to isolate difficulties)and auto-corrective so that the child can work with the material alone. It is based
on a learning method that is concrete and sensorial, specifically adapted for young children.

The work that the child does manually, develops their concentration, which is an indispensable factor
when learning anything. The material also develops motility and better control over the child's movements.
For example, the material geared to help the child learn to write will develop their wrist flexibility, grip, and writing direction.
That way the child will feel comfortable and writing will be natural for them.

The very concrete material also brings the child the capacity for abstract thought and develops logic.
The bases may be understood in depth.

The material is attractive, to entice the child to work with it, and well organised, to encourage the child
to put it back after they are finished with it (which encourages the child's natural need for structure and order.)
There are only one example of each material in the class so the child can also learn patience.

Pratical life

A lot can be learned from this material:
This material allows the child to be independent in their surroundings and to learn its social
codes
(like manners, for instance). It will also allow them to learn how to take care of their personal hygiene.

The child's coordination and motility are developed as they practice simple tasks.
Some of these tasks will also facilitate future writing skills.

Time spent on the practical life material will help the child's concentration skills, so very
important for all his work and well being. The child may, in this manner, slowly increase his power to concentrate.

The children may return regularly to this material; it is an enjoyable way to build their self-esteem.

Examples: cleaning a mirror, a button frame, pouring exercise for motility.

Sensorial Material

Children under 6 love to explore, and this material is designed with the purpose of constructing
their intelligence through experimenting with their 5 senses. The goal is to prepare the child
for abstract thinking, and a finer perception of their surroundings.

This material also allows an introduction to the detailed vocabulary needed to describe
their environment with precision.

The sensorial material allows the child to distinguish, describe, generalise and explore
various elements in their environment such as dimensions, colours, shapes, volumes,
 weights, tastes, odours and sounds.

Examples: Colour tablets (for sight development), rough/smooth boards (for touch) noise tubes (for hearing).

Language

The goal of this material is to help the child construct and develop their language its
3 fundamental expressions: oral, written, read.
-Oral expression: nursery rhymes, songs, vocabulary, games.
-Writing: The important work done with the "letter boards" with which the child traces
and memorises the form of each letter.  The form drawing material also prepares their hand for writing.
-Progressive reading exercises.
-Early grammar work with a series of geometric symbols, color coded,
which allow the child to see the structure of a sentence.

Examples: The letter boards, mobile letters and phonograms.

Mathematics

This material is concrete and auto-corrective, and must be manipulated often, in order to really
understand the abstract concept behind numbers, the idea of different quantities, symbols and operations.

Divided into 6 sections, the material deals with:
-numbers from 1 to 10
-The numeric positions
-Numbers from 11 to 100
-Memorising
-Abstraction
-Fractions

Examples: The rough number boards and 1st introduction to the decimal system. The latter is designed to introduce the child to the sensorial representation of 1, 10, 100, 1000 and a geometric representation of the power of 10, indirectly preparing for mental calculations and geometry.
